OXOLA Language Assistant - Help
You will see a button at the top (or when menu touched) to enter test mode. The test mode is a tool designed for learning the words, phrases and sentences and testing yourself on them. Your Android device (mobile phone or tablet) will randomly choose one of the words, phrases and sentences in the category and will display and speak the translation. You will then be given some predetermined time period to click on the translation which this corresponds to.
You will see a button at the top (or when menu touched) to star words, phrases and sentences. Touch the star after making a selection and the background of this word, phrase or sentence will turn white. You could use this to mark the ones that you know or alternatively the ones that you don’t know and wish to learn.
After a delay for the answer (which can be changed in the settings), the device will speak and display the next random selection. It will do 10 random selections and then display your score. Two scores are displayed for each category, the most recent score on the top left corner of the screen and the best score on the top right.
Translation Mode – The default app configuration is to display the selection of words, phrases and sentences in the source language and the translation of one of these into the target language at the top of the screen. You can change to an alternative mode where the selection of phrases are shown in the target language and the single phrase is shown in the source language.
Selection of Test Questions – In the test mode, the application will either randomly select questions from all the items in the category, only the starred items or only the unstarred items. This is a great tool for learning languages! For example, you can star all the items that you think you know and configure the test so that it only selects these items. You can then add some extra items, that you don’t know, and do the test again.

OXOLA Language Assistant Applications have now a search function, should you wish to find a particular word and you have forgotten which category it is in.
Q: Why is “Initialising TTS” displayed when I touch a phrase and there is no sound?
A: The app tried to reacquire the TTS service and this took much longer than it usually does. Touch the phrase again and it will speak the phrase.
Q: Why is “TTS language data is missing” displayed when I touch a phrase and there is no sound?
A: This means that you have not yet installed the language data for the TTS engine. Go to Android Settings->Language and Input -> Text-to-speech output and then touch the settings icon on the right of the preferred engine (usually Google Text-to-speech). Touch Install voice data and then select the target language from the list. It will then download the missing language data. If you do not see the desired target language in the list then see the answer below.
Q: Why is “TTS language is not supported” displayed when I touch a phrase and there is no sound?
A: The Google TTS engine will support the target language unless your device uses a very old version of Android. You are very unlikely to see this error but if you do there are other TTS engines which will support the target language. The SVOX classic TTS Engine supports Turkish and it has a free Turkish voice for 2 weeks. You will need to install SVOX TTS, choose a Turkish voice and install the voice data. When the trial is over, the voice is not expensive and you will find that it is an invaluable tool for your language learning. There are other TTS engines available too. We would welcome any feedback that you may wish to give us.
Q: Why does the speed of speech setting have no effect?
A: The Speech Rate setting doesn’t seem to work for the Turkish language for the Google TTS Engine for some versions of Android. The setting does work for the SVOX classic TTS Engine. For some versions of Android the speech rate setting in the App is overridden by the Android system setting. Try changing the speech rate in Android Settings->Language and Input -> Text-to-speech output.
Q: Can I stop the language test before the end?
A: Touching the “start test” button will stop a test which is in progress. Rotating the device will also stop the test.
Q: Why can’t I reset the starred selection or the scores?
A: To return all the items for the current category to their original unstarred state, you need to select the appropriate option in the Reset Options list and then you need to exit the settings menu and return to the application. The reset happens when you exit the settings menu and the Reset Options selection will have returned to None the next time that you enter the settings menu.
Q: Why is the punctuation of the phrases not consistent?
A: We agree that it is important to use punctuation and to use it consistently. However, we have listened to the TTS engine speaking all the words, phrases and sentences individually and the punctuation has been chosen to give the most natural pronunciation of each one.
